I was lucky to have a lot of time for movies this week! I’m hoping to do this regularly, no matter how few I get to watch. This week I got to a few newer releases, like Past Lives and Equalizer 3, but I also finally got around to watching some movies that have been on my list for a while, like Midnight Run and American Psycho.

Past Lives (2023)
Why you should watch:
This movie is so tight, but at the same time, it’s never in a rush. The lingering long shots are more reminiscent of a Korean film than an American film. The story and style will remind you of a Richard Linklater or Noah Baumbach film, but it arguably operates at a higher level than any film those two great directors have produced.
Most memorable quote:
t’s an In-Yun if two strangers even walk by each other in the street, and their clothes accidentally brush. Because it means there must have been something between them in their past lives. If two people get married, they say it’s because there have been 8,000 layers of In-Yun. Over 8,000 lifetimes.
– Nora
Standout performance:
Greta Lee as Nora
Streaming or Rent:
Rent on Apple TV, Amazon, YouTube, etc.
Midnight Run (1988)
Why you should watch:
Robert DeNiro is clearly having a great time in a more comedic role. With Charles Grodin, they form one of the best buddy comedy duo’s you can find in a movie. Great soundtrack, great ambience throughout the movie, and great performances all around – you won’t regret spending some time with this one.
Most memorable quote:
Are you gonna stand up there with your thumb up your ass? Or you gonna get me the fuck outta here?
– Marvin Dorfler
Standout performance:
Charles Grodin as Jonathan Mardukas
Streaming or Rent:
Streaming on Netflix
Red Rock West (1993)
Why you should watch:
If you’re able to track down a copy of this movie, give it a watch. A Coen Brothers-esque noir in a Western setting with Dennis Hopper and Nicholas Cage…honestly, it’s crazy that I even have to sell you on this movie.
Most memorable quote:
Why don’t you just blow me?
– Michael Williams
Standout performance:
Dennis Hopper as Lyle
Streaming or Rent:
Not available for streaming or purchase
American Psycho (2000)
Why you should watch:
A scathing dark comedy dunking on Wall St. bros whose entire personality revolve around the most banal things around us. It falls just short of being a true all-time classic, but a fantastic Christian Bale makes this cult-classic worthy of it’s fandom.
Most memorable quote:
I have to return some videotapes.
– Patrick Bateman
Standout performance:
Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman
Streaming or Rent:
Streaming on Peacock
The Equalizer 3 (2023)
Why you should watch:
If you’re craving a Denzel performance where he is just kicking ass in ways that would make even John Wick squeamish, you won’t be disappointed. There isn’t much going on beyond that here.
Most memorable quote:
Nine seconds. That’s what I’ll give you to decide your fate.
– Robert McCall
Standout performance:
Denzel Washington as Robert McCall
Streaming or Rent:
In Theaters
The Foreigner (2017)
Why you should watch:
You shouldn’t.
Most memorable quote:
The fuckin’ wanker threatened me and then hung up!
– Liam Hennessy
Standout performance:
Michael McElhatton as Jim Kavanagh
Streaming or Rent:
Streaming on Netflix
